A Review Of The Current Status Of The Jobs And Employment Market In The News For The Start Of The 2Nd Quarter 2010

“WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy got its best jobs report in three years Friday as employers added 162,000 nonfarm jobs in March 2010.” One newswire stated on the Jobs and Employment News updates.

Encouraging as the Labor Department might seem to sound, and it might, it wasn’t strong enough to bring down the unemployment rate. Additionally, the jobless figure remained stuck at 9.7 percent for the third month in a row and during a rather painful 2nd quarter for small to medium businesses among other things amid a surge of people returning to the labor market.

As the overall economy struggles to recover from the worst economic crisis in more than 50 years. And with the Health Care Act on the table and dividing the country, President Obama is still yet to perform on his pledge to America to turn things around.

Economists, mindful of continuing problems and uncertainty, were generally cautious in assessing the employment gain.

Some of the news quotes around the country are stating:

“Having lost 8.2 million jobs over a period of two years, it’s a drop in the bucket,” said Bart van Ark, chief economist at The Conference Board, a business-membership and research organization in New York. “It’s too early to say we have a sustainable recovery.”

Part of the concern stems from the fact it’s hard to pinpoint specific areas of the economy with the potential to send employment rocketing upward.

The housing industry, long a staple of economic growth, remains troubled, as does construction, architecture and small businesses. Overall, everyone is hurting in a phase of economic stress where some sectors are depressed, others recessed and overall the economy cannot seem to make up it’s mind where to turn. And to make matters worse, this is working its way through tax time, a ‘slow time of the year’ for a number of market sectors.

And, while manufacturing and exports have helped pull the economy out of its nosedive, as it appears in some sections of the country, they still face long-term problems of global competition and currency barriers. And the overall effects of this ‘turn around’ remains to be see across the board in the U.S. Economy thus far.

One news source has stated:

“Analysts reckon the economy needs to create 125,000 or so new net jobs a month just to keep pace with the population growth, but depending on how fast people pour into the labor market, many more jobs than that will be needed to cut into the unemployment rate.

Still, van Ark said, March was “the first month of really solid growth” in a long time. ‘We can be a little bit more optimistic.’”

Adding to the evidence of a slowly stabilizing economy, government statisticians also revised jobs data for the previous two months, turning January’s 26,000 jobs lost into a gain of 14,000 jobs that month, and February’s 36,000 job losses were revised to only 14,000. Which seems a bit more hopeful.

President Obama treated Friday’s government jobs report as good, if not great, news while speaking to factory workers in North Carolina. Which all seems a bit hopeful, word on the street counters otherwise in some States of the Union.

“I’ve often had to report bad news during the course of this year … But today is an encouraging day,” he said. “This month, more Americans woke up, got dressed and headed to work in an office, a factory, a storefront. More folks are feeling the sense of pride and satisfaction that comes with a hard-earned and deserved paycheck.” As per one news source.

Obama spoke to employees of Celgard at a meeting recently. They are a Charlotte manufacturer of lithium ion batteries used in the hybrid vehicles that help form the basis of the president’s clean-energy plans. The plant had received stimulus money and is hiring 300 more workers shortly. Which is a good sign of positive government intervention, however some sectors of the auto industry supply chain that were up for some time are now starting to feel the crunch.

“Next time somebody asks you at the grocery store, ‘What did the Recovery Act do?’ you can tell them one of the things it helped do is expand … an entire industry,” Obama said.

Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist for forecaster IHS Global Insight, said the economy had crossed an important barrier, though challenges remained. The story continued.

“Until this month, the most that we could say was that it looked like job growth was about to turn the corner. Now it seems to have done so. But it will be a long slog to bring down the unemployment rate,” he said in a research note.

Nationally, the census will be a steady job creator for several months. The Commerce Department expects to hire at least 600,000 temporary workers this year to staff the decennial survey. However this is only a temporary job, government based and has no major effect on the economy that touches home in the U.S.

Another indicator of future hiring, the temporary-help sector, added 40,000 workers last month, boosting its increase since September to 313,000. As is the news regarding employers hiring more contractors. Full time employment still stagnates.

Financial services and the information industry lost jobs in March, which is no small wonder at all, but health-care, education, retail and the leisure-industry employers all added to their payrolls. With the addition of retail and leisure, we can see some light in the tunnel of the dim economy news that has been plaguing the newswires to date.

Additionally, even the hard-hit construction sector ended its long string of severe job losses last month, adding 15,000 jobs. Showing reasonable signs of positive adjustment, however, this does not come as news to myself, after having done a lot of research and working on setting up the online resources for such trend adjustments in the Job and Employment market. Further, we just don’t know how long standing or stable this adjustment will be.

Stay tuned. The economy is working, things are changing, it is quite important to stay in touch with the news, blogs, websites and online feedback about the economy and job market. This way you’ll have a better idea of where you fit in and what you can do about your personal career situation.

Question by Zoe: Who are Mexican president’s humble but elusive kin ?
MORELIA, MEXICO — As many as half the citizens of the home state of Mexican President Felipe Calderon are believed to be working in the United States. So it was no great surprise when Calderon revealed recently that among Michoacan’s migrants were some of his own kin.

What’s odd is that apparently no one here in Calderon’s hometown, not even his family, seems to know who they are.

“I don’t know of any relative that is or has been in the United States,” said Luis Gabriel Calderon Hinojosa, a physician and the president’s eldest brother. “There are more than 100 cousins and we’re all over the place. Maybe, by chance, there’s someone on the other side.”

At an international news conference with President Bush last week, Calderon said that he had relatives working in the fields, “probably handling the vegetables you eat.” He cited them, as he had during last year’s presidential campaign, to urge a new U.S. immigration accord and more investment in the Mexican economy to slow the expatriate flow.

“I hope one day I can see them, greet them, hug them,” Calderon told Bush and reporters.

Calderon’s poignant revelation that he had family working the lowest rungs of the U.S. labor market triggered a brief media stampede to find out who they were. Later, his office said it would not reveal any names, to protect the relatives’ privacy.

Many in this state capital, including Calderon’s former high school teacher, were puzzled by the news.

“The Calderons are not farmers,” said Father Eliseo Albor, who taught the president and three of his four siblings at the private Instituto Valladolid. “They don’t have the need to cross the border…. They’ve done well. They’ve got good jobs.”

A cadre of presidential police guard the home where Calderon grew up and where his mother, Maria del Carmen Hinojosa de Calderon, still lives. It is a walled, three-story stucco house in an aging but upscale neighborhood. The president’s late father was a founder of Calderon’s National Action Party, known as PAN.

The state PAN president, Francisco Javier Morelos Borja, said he didn’t doubt Calderon’s claim. “Nearly all of us have someone abroad,” he said. Maybe they’re relatives of Calderon’s mother, from Puruandiro, he said. The town of about 65,000 has one of the state’s highest emigration rates.

Morelia Mayor Salvador Lopez Ordu–a has been pals with Calderon since childhood and grew up on the next block.

“I’m sure they have relatives who are migrants,” said Lopez, who’s seeking the PAN nomination for governor. “They could be from Puruandiro, or if not, some other pueblo. I don’t know of anyone, personally, but I’m sure it’s true.”

In Puruandiro, a 90-minute drive north of Morelia, signs of the region’s longtime migration patterns are everywhere: pickup trucks with U.S. license plates. The town is small enough for people to know where to find a Calderon relative.

“Yes, we’re cousins,” said Jesus Madrigal Hinojosa, the owner of an auto repair shop. “But I don’t know of any relatives living in the United States.”

Calderon’s description of relatives working with lettuce and other vegetables suggests they would be in California, which supplies most of the nation. Tens of thousands of Mexican immigrants work fields in the Imperial Valley, the Oxnard Plain and the Salinas Valley, as well as the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.

Michoacan has supplied California with field hands for generations. But a brief survey of passersby in Morelia’s main plaza revealed the reach of their relatives’ work abroad: New York high-rise construction, San Jose tiling, Los Angeles roofing, Oregon logging, Sacramento fruit packing and New Jersey factory work.

Shoeshine man Gabriel Ortega Zarco, 55, said eight of his 10 children are working illegally in New Jersey. “My kids tell me to meet them up north, but I’m too old for that,” he said. “The last time I was up there I froze” for three days.

Nearby, Father Gabriel Ruiz, a parish priest, said he had known the Calderon family for six years but didn’t know about any relatives living in the United States. The president’s mother attends Mass two or three times a week in Our Lady of Fatima parish. “She’s very reserved, never talks,” he said, “so I wouldn’t know much.”

Juan Luis Calderon, a civil engineer described by the president in his biography as his closest sibling, heads the local water agency. The mayor’s office called to arrange for a interview with him Tuesday to clear up the matter. He tentatively agreed.

Later on Tuesday, however, Juan Luis Calderon’s secretary said her boss could not make the meeting. And on Wednesday, she said he would be busy the rest of the week.

“President Obama will tomorrow announce a “historic” new policy involving new greenhouse gas emission standards and new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for vehicles sold in the US, sources tell ABC News.”

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=7619781&page=1

So what kind of cars will be left by then? Small, unsafe vehicles killing Americans every year. I wouldn’t want my wife or kid driving those little death machines.

And why is everything that Obama does is “historic”? The guy eats a chili dog…HISTORIC! Hey, he put mustard on the hamburger….HISTORIC!
That’s the liberal solution. Become independent of foreign oil….the hard way, instead of drilling for our own oil.
Hally. If liberals would just let us drill, we wouldn’t have that problem now would we?

Question by Tyler: According to a recent study, Fox news viewers are the most misinformed. Was that really a surprise?
A study that was managed by University of Maryland, says that in eight of the nine questions, Fox News placed first in the percentage of those who were misinformed. Here’s some results:

91 percent believe the stimulus legislation lost jobs (In reality, it created about 3 million jobs, according to CBO)

72 percent believe the health reform law will increase the deficit. (It reduces it)

72 percent believe the economy is getting worse (It has gotten better since fall 2009)

60 percent believe climate change is not occurring (Almost none of the scientist could agree with that)

49 percent believe income taxes have gone up (Can’t these people see it hasn’t in their paycheck? Didn’t we all get tax cuts?)

63 percent believe the stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts (1/3 of it included tax cuts)

56 percent believe Obama initiated the GM/Chrysler bailout

38 percent believe that most Republicans opposed TARP

63 percent believe Obama was not born in the US (Wow)

This doesn’t mean that Fox news viewers are the stupidest people in US, this means that they’re the most misinformed. When you watch too much Fox “news”, you get completely wrong idea what’s really going on.

And guess what MSNBC viewers were the best informed. Because besides telling both sides of the story, they emphasize the REAL facts.

CNN didn’t do that well (a lot better than Fox though) because they only tell both sides of the story, even if the other side’s opinion is insane and ridiculous(usually the conservative point of view) but not their own comments and just let the viewers to decide what is the real truth.

So in a nutshell:
If you don’t care so much about the facts but rather conservative opinions, watch Fox News
If you want to see as neutral and fair news as possible and decide on your own what do you believe in, watch CNN
If you want to be as well informed as possible, watch MSNBC

Best answer:

Answer by Primo
And this came from what? A liberal source? LOL!!! nice try though. MSNBC viewers are the least informed actually

EPIC FAIL

Question by : Swine Flu: Government means of getting money to re-stimulate economy?
I know, it’s a far-fetched thought! But still, it’s all over the news, “pandemic, pandemic, get your vaccine!” I think I heard earlier today on the news that at it’s peak over 100,000 people will get swine flu each day! So with everyone inevitably getting worried, thinking “I need that vaccine”, everyone will be queuing to get it. Imagine if this vaccine costs us. Maybe £5. Imagine if half the population of our countries pays for it, imagine the money the providers, i.e, the government would get.

It’s a really far-fetched thought, I know, but still, it’s plausible to a certain extent, right? Your thoughts? Maybe it is the best way to raise funds to stimulate the economy once more eh?
