Question by Abhishek G: I am doing a project on the OPEC crisis and the NAFTA trade agreement involving Canada.. I need a contact?
I am doing a project of research on the following topics included in the question, but I cannot find any information. I need somebody I can contact either in the Canadian Embassy (if they can help) or some other historian (OF the canadian ORIGIN), so that I can further research.

Best answer:

Answer by M. C.
‘Abishek’, I found your question a little too ambitious. Why? Because as far as I can understand, you want to get the direct contact to the people that took part in the NAFTA negotiation, wich sounds pretty unachieveable.
Besides that, I consider you can give it a try by looking in the link I’m posting at the end of these lines. The CFR is one of the most specific and accurated resource for every issue related to the NAFTA, so you could find a lot of different publications, studies and data about this Trade Agreement.
I hope you find this a little helpful, anyway good luck in your research.
Greetings from Mexico.

How to Get a Work Permit in Canada

Are you interested in providing a work permit to work in Canada? If so, you’ll want to use either a visa office outside Canada or the port of entry (usually the airport). It will be necessary to find a place of employment before completing the application if it expects to receive approval. A Canadian Immigration lawyer will likely point out that to find employment, you will need to be approved by the Canadian Human Resources first. Once this approval has been committed then a work permit issued by immigration authorities in Canada.
In most cases it will be necessary to secure work before trying to get permission. After this important step has been made our firm can guide you through the application process involved in the acquisition of a temporary Canadian work permit visa.

Note: It is the job of a lawyer immigration to find work for one person. What is your Canada immigration lawyer can do is offer support in obtaining a work permit after the work is offered to potential applicants.

Regular Process work permit applications

Standard procedure states that a person must obtain approval from the Canadian Human Resources to apply for work permits. This process includes this employer demonstrate their efforts in trying to find a Canadian to fill the position of Human Resources. If an employer can show evidence that the newspaper and online advertising have been put to no avail usually approval will be granted. Relaxation of these standards will only happen if the work has already been identified as a “Profession under pressure. This status means that Canada has identified this as a profession with skills shortages now and it is ready to fill this gap within its labor market with immigrants. A Canadian immigration lawyer can also offer assistance in obtaining low-skilled job offers from approved foreign worker, though expectations should be that the process is much more complicated.
After approval by the Canadian Human Resources work permit may be issued a visa allows a person to immigrate to Canada. Like all other temporary residence applications, immigration authorities will do background checks standard to ensure that the person meets the requirements in all other ways admissible in Canada prior to the issuance of work permit requirements.

When work permits do not require the approval of Human Resources

A Canadian immigration lawyer can help ensure that each work permit without first obtaining approval from Human Resources. Entrepreneurs may be exempted from screening. Within the company transfers may be exempt from this process. In addition, any person whose work is considered to confer a significant benefit to Canada can also be released.
Foreign students can receive special exemptions if they are willing to undergo training in the country. An employer wishing to hire this student will be enough to be eligible for open work permit.

NAFTA work permits, etc.

Canadian immigration lawyer can help residents of some countries receive work permits where prior Human Resources approval is not necessary. For example, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) allows citizens of the United States and Mexico to apply for work permits, without obtaining the approval of Human Resources. These people however have to be business visitors, professionals within the recipient company, traders or investors. Signed contracts with other Canada can offer this benefit to its citizens. General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) will offer the same benefits that NAFTA will be to its citizens.

Live-in care

Live in caregiver may also receive assistance from the Canada Immigration lawyer if they have an employment offer from Canada that will allow the caregiver to live in their home. Infants, elderly persons and disable all will be eligible for a nanny to care for the name the Canadian employer in this category. Employees will have 12 years of education, ability speak enough English or French to carry out basic conversation without supervision and are ready for six months training program related to the quality of their babysitter (one year work experience in the field may be substituted here). After working for at least two years as a nanny can apply for permanent residence for themselves and family members.

Maquiladoras/IMMEX Compliance – Laws and Regulations

Why Should You Attend:

If you have an IMMEX plant, are planning to incorporate one, or do business or deal with an IMMEX, this webinar is for you. It will help you understand how these plants are controlled and operated, and why specific documentation and information is required by various parties in the supply chain.

When Maquilas and PITEX programs were initially created in Mexico, each one had a different purpose with separate and distinct regulations. At the same time, both programs received administrative, accounting and customs benefits. They were an important part of the Mexican economy and represented more than 80% of the total manufacturing for Mexican exports.

However, due to the duty deferral and drawback restrictions imposed under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Maquilas and PITEX would no longer continue receiving the same benefits. Consequently, the Mexican government dismantled them and in their place created a new program known as IMMEX (Manufacturing, Maquiladora and Export Services Industry) that represented a new opportunity for the trade community.

IMMEX continues to be an excellent way to invest and do business in Mexico. Do not miss this unique opportunity to hear about all the benefits offered by this program presented by Mexican attorneys that specialize in customs and trade law.

Berkeley, CA (PRWEB) November 19, 2004

At a packed meeting Tuesday night, the Berkeley City Council unanimously approved the “Resolution to Preserve Local Sovereignty and Oppose CAFTA.”

This is Berkeley’s second step in five months to reclaim democracy from corporate interests.

Jesse Swanhuyser, director of the California Coalition for Fair Trade and Human Rights, is a Berkeley resident who came to City Hall to speak during Public Comment. He says, “The new generation of trade agreements sets policy far outside the traditional scope of ‘trade,’ and increasingly restricts the democratic process at the local and state level. Berkeley has long led struggles like these.”

This was an appropriate action for the meeting packed with citizens who honored departing Councilmembers including Maudelle Shirek and Margaret Breland. Both matriarchs have championed social justice for decades and worked to alleviate poverty.

Congresswoman Hilda Solis, the only Congressperson of Central American descent, released a statement when CAFTA was signed saying it, “will mean more job loss and wage decline for American workers…a gift to corporate interests….Our trade policies should lift people out of poverty, not keep them in it….CAFTA is bad for American workers and bad for Central America.”

This symbolic resolution urges the U.S. Congress to defeat CAFTA which negates local and state purchasing preferences if based on factors such as recycled content, vendors with a competent track record, a living wage, or avoidance of goods made with forced child labor. CAFTA could lead to challenges to local zoning and protection of ground water and other natural resources, discourage local businesses, and encourage commercial flight to low-wage areas. Two thirds of Americans oppose trade policies that usurp environmental protections, according to the Gallup poll of July. Private firms can sue governments for lost profits resulting from laws that protect the environment or public health.

Canadian Methanex Corporation has sued California for nearly $ 1 billion, using the North American Free Trade Agreement’s Chapter 11, for banning the carcinogenic gas additive, MTBE. Congress did not even discuss NAFTA’s Chapter 11 before voting on it.

If approved by Congress, CAFTA will expand NAFTA and promote the Free Trade Area of the Americas, dubbed “NAFTA on steroids.” Boston, Philadelphia and Austin have passed resolutions opposing the hemisphere-wide FTAA. Numerous labor, fair trade, environmental, women’s, faith-based, human rights and save democracy organizations have mobilized in the U.S. and in Central America.

The resolution came via Berkeley’s Peace & Justice Commission. Ann Fagan Ginger, director of Meiklejohn Civil Liberties Institute and the Commission’s first chair, says “This Resolution is a very important step for the people of Berkeley to participate directly in saving jobs and the environment from international corporate control.”

It may be read on the web at ReclaimDemocracy.org/berkeley.

The RESOLUTION to PRESERVE LOCAL SOVEREIGNTY and OPPOSE CAFTA

WHEREAS, Berkeley Municipal Code Section 3.68 establishing the Peace and Justice Commission, states that the Commission shall “(A) Advise the Berkeley City Council on all matters relating to the City of Berkeley’s role in issues of peace and social justice, including, but not limited to support for human rights and self-determination throughout the world;…[and] (C) Help develop proposals for the City Council in furtherance of the goals of peace and justice…;” and

WHEREAS, Berkeley, by its Human Rights Ordinance No. 5985 and Precautionary Principle Resolution No. 62,259, promotes “higher standards of living, full employment, and… a safe and healthy environment” for every Berkeleyan and “seeks to prevent harm;” and

WHEREAS, the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) requires basing purchasing decisions on price, thereby negating state and local

preferences regarding factors such as recycled content, small businesses, minority and women-owned businesses, vendors with a competent track record, a living wage, and avoidance of goods made with forced child labor; and

WHEREAS, CAFTA fails to preserve the traditional powers of state and local governments by failing to assure transparency in negotiating trade agreements; by failing to accord state and local officials timely access to negotiating documents to assess potential impacts on their authority and on their constituents; by failing to inform them of suspected adverse impacts; and by failing to invite them to participate in the negotiation, approval, and adjudication processes; and

WHEREAS, CAFTA expands corporate power and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) whose rules have been used 27 times to challenge public health, workplace safety and environmental laws, for example enabling Methanex Corporation to demand $ 970 million for potential future lost profits stemming from California’s ban of MTBE*, a carcinogenic gasoline additive that is polluting the stateÂ’s groundwater; and NAFTA has cost the United States over 750,000 jobs**; and

WHEREAS, CAFTA will increase foreign investor rights and shift power away from state and local government, challenging zoning and protection of ground water and other natural resources, and will discourage local businesses but encourage commercial flight to low-wage areas, without allowing meaningful input by those adversely affected; and

WHEREAS, democracy requires participation, representation, and debate. Federalism requires a clear delineation of powers shared between the state and federal governments. International trade agreements blur these distinctions, and grant foreign investors rights, participation, and representation superior to that of U.S. citizens.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Berkeley, to protect its citizens and defend BerkeleyÂ’s right of local sovereignty and oversight, oppose CAFTA and further urge that the United States Congress defeat it.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Manager is directed to post this Resolution on the World Wide Web and to send copies of this Resolution to our elected representatives in the California State Legislature: Assemblymember Loni Hancock and Senate Majority Leader Don Perata; our elected representatives in the U.S. House and Senate: Representative Barbara Lee and Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein; and the appointed U.S. Trade Representative, Robert B. Zoellick.
