Question by Jesse M: Which area of business is least dependent on a good economy?
Be broad in your consideration of “areas of business.” Include things like International Business, fashion merchandising, advertising (creative and account management), as well as the “usuals,” marketing, finance, accounting, MIS.

Thank you very much for your help.
Googie, that’s very true, but there is no denying that some areas lend themselves far more to the whims of the economy. For example, I know that when a company decides it has to cut costs, one of the areas they trim down in first is the advertising budget (which is a mistake because advertising is how you get new clients, but nonetheless, that’s what happens. I don’t know how seriously that industry is hit though and I was hoping there might be someone here who does know. How hard are marketing people hit? Everyone else? I’m starting a career late in life and I don’t want to invest time and money directing myself to a career that may or may not have jobs when I get out. I am most interested in the creative areas of business, but if my employability is going to be subject to every economic whim, I’m thinking maybe that’s a bad idea.
OOPS, “when I get out” refers to out of a graduate program. I’m not in prison or anything…
DENVERLM and EBSTAR60: I think you guys are being a little TOO specific.
Actually, re-reading Googie’s answer, he was too specific as well.

People seem not to understand what I’m asking with this question. You need to think of “areas of business” in terms of academic majors, things they offer Master’s degrees in. Yes, there are Master’s programs in say, hotel and restaurant management (food service) or retail management (supermarkets) but these are hard to find and that’s a very narrow niche. Yes, there are programs in the health care industry, but that still leaves the question of whehter or not a person would be better with health care marketing, administration/managment, accounting, technology management, and each of these areas possibly has greater economic vulnerability than others.

Yes, there are programs in direct marketing, though more likely, you’d have to major in marketing and learn direct marketing as a component of the program. How vulnerable is marketing compared to business administration, management information systems, etc?
I said “AREA OF BUSINESS” not “INDUSTRY.” Come on, somebody give me some answers I can use, PLEASE.

Don’t get me wrong, I completely appreciate the efforts of those who’ve answered so far, I just can’t use those answers.

Best answer:

Answer by googie
The business least affected by a down turn in the economy is the food business. Every one has to eat. The customers may cut back on luxury purchases but the majority will continue to spend on the basics. The product will usually determine if the economy effects it.All business areas will be effected since all are are support functions for the enterprises.

What do you think? Answer below!

MBA- Master of Business Administration is one of the world’s leading and the most coveted career option today, not just for business professionals, but for college graduates in general. Having a master’s degree in business administration is necessary for those who want to gain an advantage in the ultra-tough corporate industry. It equips students with an understanding of all major functions of a business in the corporate world. An MBA degree involves rigorous training which enables students to handle real-life business situations very effectively.

The idea of MBA originated in the USA in view of the growing industrialization and need for the scientific approaches to handle the growing business. It is, now, a world-wide recognized degree which gives training in business techniques, management techniques and leadership skills. An MBA Programme provides both theoretical as well as practical knowledge necessary to handle managerial and administrative goals. Hence, its scope is not limited only to business but it can also benefit people working in other sectors.
The role of MBA has become all more prominent in the today’s globalized world. Globalization has connected the whole world in the sense of both economic and cultural life.

There is increased economic interdependence between countries. The rapid expansion and influence of the corporate sector at the global level has necessitated a corresponding extension in the sphere of business education. In view of the modern globalized corporate environment, students must be taught to function effectively and professionally in an increasingly complex, dynamic and interdependent economy. International business education has become a key to global success which itself speaks of the importance of MBA Programmes. Because of the fast-growing popularity of such management programmes, thousands of business schools and management institutions have opened up across the world. Hence, selecting the most appropriate business school is a real challenge.

While choosing the most suitable business school, the following factors need to be considered:

1. Where do you want to study?
2. What are the admission requirements?
3. What is the graduation rate?
4. Is the MBA School or MBA program accredited?
5. What is the ranking of the MBA School or the MBA program?
6. What student support services are available?

HULT International Business School is also one of the top-ranked business education institutions, offering MBA, Masters and Undergraduate programs in five locations around the globe. It has been ranked the 44th best business education in the world and the 23rd best business education in the U.S. by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The Financial Times has also recognized it as one of the Top 100 business schools worldwide. Hult International Business School offers students the opportunity to study in five exciting cities – Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai, and Shanghai – making it the first global business school.

For all those who seek global career opportunities, MBA has emerged to be one of the most promising career options.

Question by Barracuda: To the “start a business” types in the Politics section, how would it help the American economy?
Do you not realize that over the past 20-some years, the US government has encouraged business to take American jobs out of the country?

The few businesses that make anything in America only do so out of the goodness of their heart. The rest are practically encouraged to move out.

How are people going to have any money to BUY YOUR SERVICES OR PRODUCT when you start a business then? One way or the other, an economy totally based on the service industry CANNOT remain stable forever! If we don’t make anything, America cannot participate in international trade!

You can tell poor people to start all the maid service companies and landscaping companies, but in time, there will be a glut of service industry jobs, followed by a population that has no way of paying for them.

Some basic facts about the economy:

1. We need production jobs in America.
2. We need government oversight.
3. Service industry jobs will stagnate an economy.
4. Government needs to provide social services and stop giving everything to the defense contractors.
5. Corporations need to stop being worshiped.
6. Forbes needs to eliminate their “Richest List.”

Best answer:

Answer by amazin’g
Ok…let’s all just give up. Why bother. The deck’s stacked. We’ll never make it. It’s no use trying. Let’s all just turn victim. It’ll be so much easier. We do want it easy. Someone will care for us. The govt. will care for us. Obama loves and cares for us all.

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 27, 2005

Following an ongoing and detailed research study into how ports can influence logistics provision and the way in which third party logistics providers organise themselves the Institute is recognizing the work of Yantian International Container Terminals (YICT), a division of Hutchison Port Holdings as the Global leader in port technology and containerisation.

The announcement comes as a result of the Institute’s ongoing analysis of the efficiency with which container terminals are operated. The research has been targeted at revealing which port most readily integrates themselves into a seamless supply chain and continually search for efficiencies in the logistics process. The research sought to identify the ports, which set the standards of excellence in the way terminals are operated.

In recognising YICT, the Institute is underlying the importance of the continuing and expanding co-operation between 3PLs and port operators to make the process more efficient. Time consuming bureaucracy and inefficiency can have no part in the global supply chain.

The philosophy behind YICT and its attitude towards its operations is that it is part of the logistics process, where there must be due regard for both the inbound and outbound mechanisms that surround port movement. The Institute believes that this innovative approach, the port paying due respect to the smooth operation of the supply chain, should be mirrored across the globe

The ‘Spirit of YICT’ is such that both its management and operations staff have a commitment to finding further efficiencies on a daily basis.

YICT is a joint venture established by Hutchison Port Holdings and the Shenzhen Yantian Port Group. The JV commenced operations in mid-1994. The Company is responsible for operating and managing the first 3 Phases of Yantian Port, where it has nine container berths. Total investment now reaches HK$ 13.8 billion. The past eleven years have seen exponential growth at the port in large part due to the rapid expansion of the Chinese economy.

The natural deepwater Port at Yantian has led to it attracting the major international shipping line. There are currently 74 weekly shipping services calling at Yantian, which include 41 US bound and 22 bound for Europe, making it one of the busiest ports in Southern China.

The port is surrounded by a sophisticated road network, which ensures the smooth flow of cargo between the port and the manufacturing bases. It also enables Yantian to have frequent and accessible contact with southern China. As a result of the rapid development of Yantian Port and Eastern Shenzhen, YICT has co-operated with the municipal and district governments, traffic management and planning departments on several initiatives which have included both financial support and material resources to upgrade the local road network. As part of continuing infrastructure development in the area 7 major road improvement projects are due for completion in 2007.

Pingyan Railway, which starts at Yantian in the south, is a dedicated railway with a total length of 23 kilometres. It provides YICT with distribution, consolidation and multi-modal transportation services.

The port company is continually striving to minimise bureaucracy and recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau to increase inspection and quarantine efficiency. These improvements to business procedures and increased speed with cargo declarations have enabled customers to save time and money. The continued strive to innovate and respond to customers’ requirements in both managements and operations are all contributing to the standard that has Yantian in a ‘class of its own’. As a demonstration of its own efficiency Yantian holds the world record for Container Movements.

Commenting on the award Kieran Ring, CEO of the Global Institute of Logistics said:

“Velocity is the hallmark of effective logistics. The global supply chain is as strong as its weakest link and as fast as its slowest one. Much like a relay race the effectiveness of the process is all about the handover or interchange between the athletes in the team or in the case of logistics the modes of transport employed. If executed correctly and diligently no speed is lost in the hand over, however if the receiving team member is not alive to the imminent transaction and constantly in a state of expectancy the process breaks down and worse, continues through to the next relay in the race.

Logisticians have traditionally seen the port piece in the global supply chain equation as the weakest link or if you like the team member cast as the poor receiver/ deliverer. Ports have long enjoyed the enviable position of being indispensable in the creation of and execution of international and global supply chains and as such tended to set the transport agenda in their space as opposed to accommodating it. If the global logistics revolution was to succeed then a new modern type of port had to emerge, our objective was to identify and accredit it.

In bestowing the Institutes inaugural ‘Best Global Container Port of the Year 2005-06” accreditation on YICT, we are confident that we have identified the benchmark port in global containerization. Since its inception in 1994, YICT has set itself apart by approaching its task differently. YICT, as a result of its enormous responsibility to provide a quality service that supports China’s emergence as the world’s leading trading nation and also because of competition from other port operators in the region, adopted a very open flexible approach.

Right from the outset YICT made efforts to understand and reach out to those businesses that would use their port, working with what it clearly views as its partners, to provide a competitive, efficient solution for its clients. In an effort to communicate this enthusiasm YICT has invested in next generation technology and materials handling in anticipation rather than in reaction to market changes. As we all know putting your money where your mouth is, is still the greatest talking that any organization can do.

YICT’s management and executives have become available to the global logistics community in a way that we haven’t witnessed before and have done much to herald in a new dawn in the history of port operator/shipper relations, We are delighted to honor them in this way and encourage port operators worldwide to look no further than Yantian when choosing the operation to emulate.

I would like, on behalf of the Institute’s council and members, to congratulate all at the port on this wonderful achievement and to encourage them to continue to innovate, they have the global third party logistics industry’s support.”

Speaking at the announcement of the award, Mr. Kenneth Tse, Director and General Manager of YICT said, “I’m very honoured to accept this award on behalf of Yantian International Container Terminals. It shows that YICT’s past efforts have been well recognised by industry’s leaders – carriers, end users and logistics experts.

“In today’s global economy, international businesses are seeking further opportunities in sourcing globally. To survive, YICT has to be an integral part of the supply chain. We must support the logistics community to stay competitive.”

About Yantian International Container Terminals

How to Write your Resume and Market yourself for an International Assignment

Do you dream about working abroad? Do your short or long-term career goals include an international assignment? Maybe you want to practice your ability to speak multiple languages. Perhaps you completed coursework or a degree in international business. Or maybe you just want to broaden your corporate qualifications with a more global perspective and multicultural experience.

With an increasingly diverse workforce and global economy, international business experience — whether that involves frequent international business trips, short-term overseas assignments, or longer-term relocation to foreign locations — can certainly be valuable as a building block for your entire career.

With more and more multinational firms transferring employees between global locations, your chances of winning a coveted overseas assignment have never been better. But, how do you market yourself for these positions?

As with most job searches, one of your first steps will be to develop your portfolio of personal marketing documents. In other words, you must prepare your resume/CV and job search letters. Do the terms resume and CV (curriculum vitae) confuse you?

The first thing to understand is that different countries use different terms to describe what is essentially the same type of document. In fact, in international circles, the terms “resume” and “CV” are often used interchangeably. But, to complicate the issue, depending on the country you are applying to, the requirements of what to include in your resume/CV and in what format to include it may be very different.

For example, in the U.S. you should never include a photograph of yourself in your resume (unless you are a model or an actor/actress). Likewise, you should not include any information about your birthday, marital status, family status, or other similar personal details. In fact, if you do include photos or personal data, most U.S. employers will simply discard your resume rather than risk a potential discrimination lawsuit. On the other hand, personal photographs and data are expected and often required on CVs meant for European or Asian employers.

In U.S., Canadian, and some other job markets your work experience should be included in reverse chronological order (most recent to oldest). In many other job markets around the world, your experience should be listed in straight chronological order (oldest to most recent).

Clearly, it is crucial that you be aware of the requirements and expectations of the job market you are applying in. You must take the time to research and learn these differences before preparing or adapting your resume for international employers.

In some cases, when you are applying to the overseas location of a multinational company, the decision-makers for the position will be of a nationality other than the location in which you are applying. For example, you may be targeting a position in Hong Kong, and know that the person making the decisions for that position is an American expatriate. In this case, you may want to submit a resume written in the U.S. style which will be more familiar to the decision-maker.

Our expertise is in creating resumes in the U.S. style. However, our client base is worldwide and our resumes have been used successfully by people all over the globe seeking international assignments based in the U.S. or targeting positions worldwide when they have determined that the U.S.-style is most appropriate. The lesson: do your research and know your audience, then tailor your approach to the expectations of the audience.

Regardless of the job you are targeting, and what country that job is in, if your goal is to go global you definitely want to emphasize and highlight your international travel and multicultural experiences, your foreign language abilities, and any coursework you have completed that is relevant to international business. You can weave all of this into the body of your resume/CV and may even create a separate section to call it out in greater detail.

Finally, above all, be open-minded and flexible. Your eagerness to learn and your adaptability are key predictors of how successful you will be on international assignment. So, don’t be afraid to ask questions and adapt to new ways of doing things. Your international job search is not the time to hold tight to your own cultural preferences. Be flexible! If you don’t know what is expected or required of job candidates in a particular company or foreign location, ask! Then adapt your approach.

Here is a checklist to help you prepare your international career marketing portfolio:

___The content and format of my resume/CV has been modified to conform to the requirements of the international job market I am targeting.

___The content and format of my resume/CV has been modified to conform to the expectations of the decision-maker for the position I am targeting.

___I have paid particular attention to requirements regarding photographs and personal data and have adapted my resume/CV accordingly.

___My resume/CV has been translated into another language if necessary and has been reviewed by a native speaker of that language.

___My resume/CV emphasizes and includes information about all of my previous multicultural and international business experience and qualifications.

___My resume includes a thorough listing of my foreign language abilities.

___My resume/CV includes detailed descriptions of my education and training (educational requirements and degrees vary around the world, so it is often helpful to describe your degrees in terms of their local equivalent).

___The design of my resume/CV had been modified to fit on the paper size that is the standard in the international location I am applying in.

___My resume/CV has been proofed and is completely free of errors.

___My resume/CV uses simple fonts and a classic, easy-to-read design.

___The electronic files of my resume/CV are prepared in standard formats, including Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF, and plain text ASCII.

___I have researched and scrupulously followed any guidelines for submission of my resume/CV as described by the company I am applying to.

___I have sent my resume/CV and job search letter by email when an email address is available, but have followed up with a hard copy by regular postal mail.
